DALA HORSE CROSS STITCH PATTERN
This cute Swedish red dala horse cross stitch pattern is an easy Christmas project to make. With elements of Nordic folk art and Scandinavian style decoration, this holiday craft makes a beautiful gift or Xmas wall ornament, with no back stitches or half stitches and only four colours. The finished piece fits perfectly into a 6” hooped embroidery frame when embroidered on 14 count Aida. Included are instructions on dyeing white or cream Aida fabric using a common household ingredient to create the darker Aida in the photo, so the white stands out more.
The dala horse is usually a carved, red painted Swedish wooden horse given to children as a toy. Horses were highly valued in 17th century Switzerland and making small horses offered additional income for poor families and travellers. In 1939, the dala horse became famous throughout the world and became symbolic of Sweden. Dala horses are often associated with Christmas these days but they used to be popular all year round. Please note this is a cross stitch pattern in PDF format only and no fabric, DMC floss or other materials are included in the listing. If you want the frame to look like the one in the photo, please purchase our popular frame wrapping tutorial separately, for complete step-by-step instructions in a full colour photo PDF.
